Army EOD Team Leader Killed From IED Explosion
Albany, New York The remains of 24-year old Staff Sgt Derek Farley were flown back from Afghanistan to be laid to rest. Farley served as an EOD technician team leader with the 702nd EOD Company. He was two weeks from completing his tour of duty in Afghanistan when he died from an IED explosion.
Farley was born in Troy, New York and had served in the military for six years. He received a Purple Heart after he lost the hearing in one ear to a bomb detonation in Iraq, where he served from 2006 to 2007 with the 756th EOD Company.
He is survived by his parents, his brother and three sisters. The family has asked that any donations be made to the EOD Memorial Foundation, 7040 CR 772, Webster, Fla. 33597.
Farley's life was recently highlighted on the ABC News Diane Sawyer "Person of the Week" segment.
