Concerns Raised Over Munitions Debris in Public Park

Lakewood, Colorado Munition debris including artillery shell remnants were found by a hiker on the Green Mountain open space public park have caused concern that UXO may exist in the area. The use of the area as an impact area dates back to the 1930s when a portion of Green Mountain was leased by the National Guard for artillery target practice for rounds fired from Camp George West in Golden.

The munitions debris found on the mountain's north slope does not pose an explosive safety hazard but does raise concerns that UXO may exist in the area. These concerns have prompted the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment to draft a letter to the National Guard stating that they believe that "immediate action is necessary to reduce further risks to the public" because the area is open to the public.
